    On the financial aid, if a 141 program is associated with a college program it is much easier to get financial aid and student loans. My particular school also can take GI bills.

    I work at a 141 2 year college in WI, airlines, charter places, and Flight schools alike love our grads, best test pass rates around. But it’s tough man, not the place for those guys taking years for PPL. Also had my own 61 school on my own, it’s fun and more flexible, but it’s impossible to meet the same standard of ground training.(unless your paying a CFI to sit there for hours on end with you)

    I understand the sentiment toward Stage Checks. I'm a 141 PPL student (who holds a bachelors in Mech Engineering), already passed my written, but the school won't allow me to schedule my checkride until I've completed separate mock checkrides with my CFI and a check instructor (final stage check). So that's adding big gaps in training and lengthening my time to certification. My flight frequency drops waiting for these stage checks. It feels counterintuitive, I'm losing proficiency at the most critical portion of my training.

    • @LukeKirk1113
      @LukeKirk1113 19 часов назад

      How long does it take to book a stage check? I’m a 141 CFI and it’s never more than a week for stage check and often about a week after that for checkride. And you should be using that time to keep studying for your upcoming tests, go observe training sessions with other students. Shouldn’t loose proficiency in that short of a time and you can always fly extra for proficiency in the meantime with your CFI.

      @@LukeKirk1113 Stage checks are usually within 1-2 weeks, but DPE availability is like 3-5 weeks out right now. So basically I'm spending over a month just jumping through hoops. I understand they want me to be prepared, but at a Part 61 I could just demonstrate proficiency and get endorsed for the checkride much sooner.

    • @LukeKirk1113
      @LukeKirk1113 18 часов назад

    You guys have pretty much nailed the variables, but one thing as a crop duster and mountain pilot I would add is the basic flying experience gained in low powered airplanes. When fuel energy is almost always a high percentage of total energy available at high DA and max load, students may fail to appreciate the law of the roller coaster, what the airplane want to do in all turns, free ground effect acceleration energy, down drainage egress, and even orographic and thermal lift available. In the C-140 at Monte Vista where I taught, I make sure that students understood that when pulling back results in little or no climb they might try pushing on the yoke a bit. I very much agree about the need to learn computers and modern avionics. I got most of my 400 hours IMC in Hueys that had no autopilot and really felt alone when IMC alone in airplanes, but am amazed at these young pilots flying IMC alone with modern avionics help. I quit my CFII work when the knobs got too small (poor nerves and feeling) and I was too dense to keep up with different computerized systems. IMC or teaching, we have to have full confidence in our mental and physical ability. I agree with your no GPS training. We Army guys prefer ADF as the needle always points to the station over VOR, but we also had the Radio Magnetic Indicator. And how many Private students know to fold a map to a strip map condition and place destination up so that what is right of us is right on the sectional as well, left left, etc. And do they learn to use rudder only to maintain target/heading and keep the wings level and have a hand available to deal with maps, wis wheel, and such. I am old and mostly all used up, but I do fly with all the new students at the local flight school (lots now.) I teach/encourage teaching flying first and ACS second. I have to modify my crop duster basic level in low ground effect acceleration to cruise, pitch to just clear obstructions, Dutch rolls to 45 degree bank to illustrate the human need to lead rudder, crop duster energy management 1 g at any bank angle turn, and the apparent brisk walk (short final) rate of closure approach. It can work however. If trimmed to Vy, what will the airspeed do (as opposed to what the airplane wants to do) in the turn to crosswind leg? Why not teach the student to relax all back pressure in this turn. This would agree with the airplane to maintain trimmed airspeed rather than to maintain (or climb) altitude. What about leading rudder, yes we want coordination, rather than stepping on the ball after adverse yaw in turns? What about jamming our thumb aside the stick or under one side of the yoke on short final where we do not want to turn and can never achieve longitudinal alignment (or wings level butt to target heading) with coordinated turns. Yes, when the student looks over at us, say walk the rudder to properly yaw/align with the centerline between our legs. Stuff like that.

I watched a few of her videos before they were taken down, and also watched Hoover's video twice on @PilotDebrief if she and her father really were acting they definitely need to get Academy Awards posthumously for keeping it up in all of their videos so convincingly and even roping the CFI into playing along. No. That wasn't a stunt gone wrong. It was what it was. And that's tragic enough without trying to interpret anything more into it. And I guess when the final report by the NTSB is out it will confirm it.

    It seems most clubs that have been around for a decade or more have older planes that are pretty much paid for, so the costs are mainly operational. If you're looking to buy a newer craft, $200k is kind of a starting point. Getting a bunch of people together to split the cost could be hard -- at $2k per share, that means 100 members! Or 10 members at $20k per share. The operating costs are the same either way. But I've noticed a lot of used planes where the total time looks like they only get flown 100 hours or so per year. If you've got the money to plop down on a plane that costs $150k - $250k, plus 100% of the operating costs and overhead, then it's not a big deal. This was very informative, but I'd like to know how to go about setting up a club as a way of making fractional ownership affordable for 10-20 members who are acquiring a new(er) plane for those of us who can't afford $200k. Like the DA22 club he mentioned -- he didn't say what the member shares are, but they can't be in the $3k range that this guy is paying for access to a 1969 Cessna that might have cost $15k when the club was formed.

    In all honesty unless you are doing a really long flight with multiple refuelings along the way there is no good reason to use the autopilot. You just have to climb, set your heading and go straight to your next waypoint. The autopilot should be used to make the trip more comfortable and that's it. I have done multiple flights for up to 6hrs all manual flights, I use the autopilot from time to time so I don't forget how to use it but as long as the plane is well trimmed I have no problems keeping it straight. I like to approach flying the same way I do driving.

    Wow, went through pilot debrief and you guys on my fellow Tennessean's demise and am shaken. In the early 80s my life long best friend wanted me to go watch hang gliders fly in Chattanooga where he was taking lessons as we both loved all flying things as kids growing up. I went, started lessons too and quickly out paced him on skill milestones. I took to it like a duck to water and he struggled and eventually left the sport including the glider we purchased together. He never did get the spatial, speed, situational awareness, attitude, collection of all availble data thing. In short, he did not have the instincts a safe and competent pilot must have to be good. Inborn. One of my instructors at that school told me he was going to scratch my buddy and he did. He told me that about 1 in 15 students are dismissed during training. GA needs something like this. I flew Hangs 7 years, flew and sold unltralights and took GA lessons and did solo but then a life got in the way and I never got back to it. I have followed aircraft crashes for 45 years now and her story is so damn sad.

      The real answer is to talk to an aviation medical examiner[AME] that is approved to issue first class certificates, you can get a list of local AME's by searching the FAA website. An examination appointment is around $200-$250 depending on the area of the country and class of certificate. Talk to the doctor at the start and say you only need a third class certificate but you want to know if you would pass a first class examination (This way if you don't qualify for first class but you do for third class you won't have a rejection on your record). If you qualify for a first class than you may as well get it, the appointment fee is based on what tests they do not what they issue. You won't need first class before the privileges expire (12 months), but many airline applications ask "Have you had a first class medical certificate in the last 5 years." As for the headaches (I am not a doctor so the specifics may vary, this is just a rough outline.): Does it cause any sudden symptoms, or are they extreme? Some people have migranes that cause them to get dizzy or nearly blackout or they occur without warning. If they are slow onset and don't cause functional problems beyond discomfort then it probably won't disqualify you. There is also an appeals process for anything that doesn't meet the first line of requirements. eg. If you have a medicine that effectively treats the problem but isn't on the preapproved list, that would likely need the special approval process. They may also require some sort of extra cost examination like an MRI to prove there isn't a hidden issue like a swollen blood vessel in your brain.
